Boyfriend requests a favor of girlfriends of the world

By Colin Remes

Today is Valentine’s Day. Time for teddy bears, flowers, chocolates and commercials saturating my sports radio programs with reminders to all the guys not to screw up and upset your lady.

I think for the most part, we can all agree that Valentine’s Day is mostly aimed toward guys doing things for their ladies. I want to make it clear that I do not have a problem with this whatsoever. In fact, I think it’s wonderful that we have a day just randomly put in February where we can dote on our significant others and do sweet things for them. However, it is a day that is mostly aimed at guys doing things for their ladies and not the other way around.

This is of course is not the norm. There are plenty of wonderful girls out there who do equally wonderful things for their guys on Valentine’s Day as their guys do for them. Every commercial I’ve heard or seen so far would not have you believe this. So I propose a holiday about ladies just doting on the great guys they have in their lives. So from now on March 14 should be known as “Steak and Beer” day.

There have been holidays proposed like this before such as “Boyfriend Appreciation Day,” which was a Facebook trend I noticed this time last year. I truly appreciated that it was spread by many of my female friends. More power to you ladies for being proactive with this great idea.

Steak and Beer day is exactly what it sounds like. And it is very simple. Cook your man a steak, get him a six pack of his favorite beer and maybe rent one of his favorite action movies or take him out to a movie you would normally never go to with him. There isn’t a boyfriend in the world that wouldn’t appreciate a day where he gets to be a guy while simultaneously hanging out with the woman of his affection.

There’s a lot of ways to celebrate this day, and not every guy is going to want a steak and a six pack of beer. This particular writer’s ideal Steak and Beer day would involve a gigantic cheeseburger, a bottle of bourbon and perhaps The Boondock Saints 1 and 2 back to back. Or really, any movie where a bunch of stuff blows up.

So ladies, if your guy goes all out and does exactly what you want for Valentine’s Day and makes you happy, thank him by celebrating this new holiday in March. This way we all get four days throughout the year to celebrate being in a relationship with someone we care about: Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s for the ladies and Steak and Beer day for the guys.

Have a happy Valentine’s Day this February, and a happy Steak and Beer day this March.
