Feed’em Soup fundraiser serves milkshakes, cookies

Milkshakes, music and cookies drew a full house to Riccardi’s Red Hots & Soda Fountain for a Feed’em Soup fundraiser Sunday afternoon.

Riccardi’s, 418 W. State St. in Sycamore, offered over 35 different milkshakes, as well as snacks like cookies, fried snickers, fried apples and bacon to patrons. They also offered a speciality “souper-hero” milkshake, which consisted of cinnamon rolls and bacon.

Feed’em Soup typically does 10 to 15 fundraisers a year, said Derek Gibbs, Feed’em Soup marketing director. However, Riccardi’s did all the planning for the milkshake fundraiser.

Riccardi’s part-owner Sue Riccardi said planning took a couple of months. However, Riccardi said she didn’t have to spend a lot of money on advertising.

“It was a lot of word of mouth,” Riccardi said.

Gibbs said Feed’em Soup also doesn’t typically spend a significant amount on marketing for their events. Instead, they utilize resources like Facebook, Twitter and friends to spread the word.

“We receive no state or federal funding,” Gibbs said. “So things like this every month help pay for our bills in general,” .

Feed’em Soup, 122 S. First St., offers community meals the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. The organization also offers a food pantry, clothing closet and children’s programs free to the community.

“There’s a lot of expenses involved with just existing,” Gibbs said.
