Two men arrested in connection with the Sept. 28 shooting on Lucinda Avenue appeared in court Friday for a bond hearing, said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler.

Spangler said bond was set at $750,000 for Eric Sims, 20, of Evergreen Park and Ventreal Lewis, 20, of Harvey. Sims and Lewis are charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, armed violence and armed robbery, all of which are class X felonies.

Neither Sims, nor Lewis is thought to be the shooter, Spangler said.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight Sept. 28 near the Village Commons Bookstore.

Spangler said the incident was the result of a drug deal between the victim and the suspects. The shooter got into a car with the victim with the intention of robbing him. The shooter produced a handgun and the victim was shot in the leg inside the car. Police do not have the shooter in custody, Spangler said.

According to a Sept. 29 Northern Star article, the victim initially told police he was shot when three men attempted to rob him in the Village Commons Bookstore parking lot.

According to a DeKalb Police Department press release, an arrest warrant was issued Oct. 14 for an individual identified as the shooter. The release states the individual is a juvenile but will be charged as an adult. The juvenile will be charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, armed violence and armed robbery. All of the charges are class X felonies.
