Steven Williams and Elizabeth Elie were crowned Homecoming king and queen during halftime at Saturday’s football game against the West Michigan Broncos.

“It’s definitely an honor,” Elie said. “This is always something I wanted to do before I graduated.”

Elie said she felt her crowning was a victory for her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta.

“I wanted to continue that tradition of winning homecoming,” Elie said.

Elie said her sorority has produced homecoming queens for 2005, 2007 and 2008.

Elie said she appreciates her crowning and she feels like she is ready to serve NIU.

“I’m here for [students],” Elie said. “I am here to serve.”

Williams was also appreciative of garnering the title.

“I feel great,” Williams said. “It was more of an accomplishment for my organization; I feel like I did it for them.”

Steven Williams is a member of the Black Male Initiative, a community service group for the DeKalb area.

Williams said his victory represents more of a victory for his fellow NIU students and a triumph over adversity.

“Whenever people congratulate me I’m going to say my crown is your crown,” Williams said.

Williams said he is just trying to be a leader and he said he wants to inspire others to be leaders.
