How do you like these apples, Windy City?
October 9, 2011
Attending NIU might make one feel disconnected from the rest of the world. An hour and a half from Chicago, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t missing out on anything. But come autumn, Chicago probably feels the same way. Being nestled amongst the skyscrapers keeps one far away from legitimate farms, apple orchards and pumpkin patches.
But Fall in DeKalb means corn mazes and hay rides unmatched as one gets closer to the Windy City. To make sure you know where to get your wholesome October fun, here’s a breakdown of some of the county’s finest.
Jonamac Orchard,
19412 Shabbona Road, Malta
With a pick-your-apples orchard and an elaborate, themed corn maze (this year’s is dedicated to the new DeKalb High School), Jonamac is a staple of DeKalb County as the colors start to change. Make sure to pick up some of its famous cider and get your picture taken in the big rocking chair.
Honey Hill Orchard,
11747 Waterman Road, Waterman
In addition to the standard fare of apples and pumpkins, Honey Hill in Waterman offers raspberries that you can pick right off the vine. Visit its website and check the ripening schedule to make sure your visit coincides.
Kuipers Family Farm,
1N318 Watson Road, Maple Park
Yes, this area is prime real estate for corn mazes. But how many offer one with three difficulty levels? Kuiper’s boasts a layout fit for any age. Once the snow begins to fall, Kuiper’s closes up its fall festivities and starts up Christmas tree sales.
