Sox ready to venture with Ventura

By Matt Hopkinson

Chicago White Sox fans, you have every single reason to be upset.

On Thursday, the White Sox announced the hiring of former Sox third baseman Robin Ventura to a multi-year deal.

Ventura comes into this job with no prior coaching experience, although general manager Kenny Williams wanted someone with the character, professionalism and familiarity with the organization that Ventura possesses.

I, for one, am perfectly OK with this hiring.

I don’t see the White Sox being competitive for many years to come, so what’s the harm in making a low-cost hire when so much money is tied to under-performing veterans?

Terry Francona would have cost the organization upwards of $4 million.

Ventura cannot do any worse than Ozzie Guillen did in his last season. I’m sure Ventura has enough common sense to make correct pitching choices, unlike Guillen, who used Will Ohman for more than one at bat against a lefty.

Complain all you want, White Sox fans. But this move has typical-Jerry-Reinsdorf-hire all over it, just like Guillen did back in 2004.

The only negative I can see as a result of this is the drones of affection emanating from the mouth of Ken “Hawk” Harrelson.
