Independent defeats Phi Sigma Kappa to win B Championship

At the beginning of the night both teams were undefeated, but in the end only one could win.

Intramural Flag Football championship games took place on the turf of Huskie Stadium Thursday night.

Independent (6-0) and Phi Sigma Kappa (5-1) B teams battled it out for their division title, but the Independent team won 30-0.

“Being on the turf and enjoying the atmosphere is really cool,” said Rhonda Hampton, assistant director of Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs. “It’s normally just the athletes who get to play on the turf, but this gives the everyday student the opportunity to experience it.”

The B team is said to be the less competitive of the two divisions, but little difference in pace and skills is seen between the A and B teams.

Although the attendance was slim to none in the stadium, that didn’t stop the players from having fun and playing a game that they truly enjoy.

“The spirit on the field and the camaraderie between us bonds us as brothers,” said Taylor Dupre, Independent B sophomore mechanical engineering major. “Also, I really enjoy beastin’ it out with my teammate and best friend, Kevin Stroud.”

Stroud is one of the key players for the Independent B team but was out for the championship game due to a knee injury.

The spirit between the Independent B team kept growing as the score kept increasing.

At the end of the first half, the Independent team had racked up a total of 18 points, with the Greek Phi Sigma Kappa at 0.

Regardless of the score, everyone had smiles on their faces and made sure to keep each other’s spirits up.

“I like being outside and being able to play with other Greek houses, which makes it more competitive,” said Mike Hankla, Phi Sigma Kappa senior and accounting major. “I like being on the team because I’ve known most of my teammates for four years and it’s a lot of fun.”

Independent’s quarterback, senior marketing Adam Prekwas, ran in one touchdown and passed for two more, which were caught by teammates Austin Weiss and Paul Vargas.

Vargas also made an interception which he ran for a 20-yard touchdown.

The points kept coming and the time kept ticking.

At the end of the second half, the Independent team B was awarded the championship title, along with bragging rights and a T-shirt.

“We were relentless, versatile, and we fed off their fear,” Weiss said. “That’s why we’re champions.”
