NIU Division II men’s hockey team split a pair of road games against Robert Morris this weekend.

The Huskies (1-1) dropped their first game vs. Robert Morris (1-1) 3-2, but recovered with a 6-3 victory.

Despite their loss on Friday, Huskies head coach Greg Chromy said a lot can be taken out of the first game of the season.

“The team played hard,” Chromy said. “We outshot the other team. I thought we outplayed them, [but] we just ended up taking a penalty late. A couple of penalties late in third period and they got a couple of goals on it and they ended up winning the game.”

NIU captain Mike Sible said goaltending kept the Huskies in Friday night’s game.

“Nick Bonin in goal played outstanding, kept us in the game, made numerous saves in key situations,” Sible said.

Sophomore Mark Greenberg scored a shorthanded goal on Friday for the Huskies, and senior Mike Strumberger tallied the other goal.

Bonin had 39 stops in the Huskies 6-3 victory. For the weekend, Bonin made 86 saves while facing 92 shots.

Sible was quick to praise Bonin.

“He played outstanding; he gave us a chance to win both hockey games.” Sible said.
