MONDAY
The COMMUNITY DANCE SCHOOL AT NIU is beginning its fall session this month. Creative Movement, ballet, pointe, tap, Irish step, hip hop, and ballroom, Latin and Swing are offered weekly in Anderson and Gabel Halls from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday. THE WOMEN’S RESOURCE CENTER is collecting no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider for the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program. Stop by any of the drop-box locations to donate between Oct. 3 and Oct. 28: the Women’s Resource Center, the Holmes Student Center (near the Huskie bus turnaround), the Residential Administration Office in Neptune East, the Community Advisor Resource Center in Lincoln Hall, and the Stevenson Area Office. THE WOMEN’S STUDIES PROGRAM will host a talk by NIU Professor Diana Swanson regarding her experiences visiting a new school for girls in Kenya. SOUP & SUCCESS, a series of informational workshops, will host an event regarding test anxiety from 2 to 3 p.m. in Holmes Student Center Heritage Room. The event will feature representatives from the Counseling and Student Development Center giving advice on how to overcome test anxiety and do better on exams. THE FOLKLORE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE will hold its weekly meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. in DuSable Hall Room 300. LATINO RESOURCE CENTER will sponsor a lecture by Dr. L. Nolan Cabrera, an assistant professor at the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Gabel Hall Cavan Auditorium. Cabrera graduated from UCLA where he worked on Dr. Sylvia Hurtado’s NIH- funded project regarding diversifying the sciences. Dr. Cabrera’s primary research interest include race/racism in higher education, whiteness formation, diversity and affirmative action. THE CENTER FOR NONGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT will host a “teach-in” regarding the current famine and humanitarian crisis in the research-rich Horn of Africa at noon in room 100 of the Campus Life Building. “Horn of Plenty? Famine: Man-made, Natural Disaster in Africa” is a free event and will feature speakers and audience discussion.
