Epstein should be Cubs next GM

By Jimmy Johnson

Theo Epstein is considered Beantown’s golden child.

The Boston Red Sox’s general manager helped architect two World Series Champion teams in 2004 and 2007.

But now, Epstein’s tenure with the Red Sox may be over.

Who is his next employer that is lathered with “curses” which he might be asked to solve?

None other than the Chicago Cubs.

Currently, well, for a long time, the Cubs have been in disarray, losing with regularity for over a century.

And with Epstein on the market and Cubs’ owner Tom Ricketts looking for a suitable decision maker in the front office, this might be his man.

The baby-faced general manager isn’t a sorcerer of any kind.

He can’t shun black cats or vanquish billy goats, and he certainly can’t jump in the DeLorean DMC-12 with Doc Brown to prevent Steve Bartman and Alex Gonzalez from crapping the bed in that unforgettable evening in 2003.

But he could build a winner here.

Granted, Epstein could be exiled from his hometown and be perceived as the boy who ran away from a team that choked this year by not getting into the playoffs.

But if he comes to the Northside and does what nobody thinks anyone can, he could go down as one of the greatest GM’s in the sport’s history.
