MONDAY

SYCAMORE PUBLIC LIBRARY will host a lecture titled “Reflections on the Civil War” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library. The lecture will be given by avid Civil War collector and enthusiast Tom Oestreicher. The event is free and actual Civil War artifacts will be available to examine. THE COMMUNITY DANCE SCHOOL at NIU is beginning its fall session this month. Creative Movement, ballet, pointe, tap, Irish step, hip hop, and ballroom, Latin and Swing are offered weekly in Anderson and Gabel Halls from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Sunday. SOUP & SUCCESS, a series of informational workshops geared towards student success initiatives, will host a “Public Speaking 101” event from noon to 1 p.m. in the Illinois Room at the Holmes Student Center. The event will feature a presentation by a current NIU student and National Speech Champion to help equip students with techniques for speaking to large audiences. Free soup will also be provided. RARE BOOKS AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS curator Lynne M. Thomas will give a discussion titled “Herding Cats for Fun & Profit: Editing Creative Nonfiction for Popular Cultural Materials” at noon in the Blackhawk Annex in the Holmes Student Center. OVEREATERS ANONYMOUS will host a Walk and Talk at the NIU Lagoon at 8 a.m. OA is a 12 step group for people who want to stop focusing too much on food and/or eating compulsively.
