Xavier defeats NIU 2-1

No. 13 ranked NIU men’s soccer had its undefeated season come to an end this weekend at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic.

The Huskies (6-1-0) fell to Xavier on Friday, 2-1 in overtime.

Sophomore Gael Rivera got the Huskies off to a fast start, scoring a goal in the third minute of the game to give his team an early 1-0 lead.

The Musketeers answered back two minutes into the second half and tied the game 1-1 on a goal from sophomore Andy Kaplan.

Kaplan’s goal was the first goal NIU has allowed since its game against Oakland on Sept. 2.

The game went into overtime and in the fifth minute, until Xavier sophomore Gino DePaoli scored the game-winning goal and handed the Huskies their first loss of the season.

“Obviously you never want to lose,” said NIU head men’s soccer coach Eric Luzzi. “I was disappointed in the way we lost, and I also felt that we deserved to win this game.”

NIU had numerous chances in the second half, as they outshot the Musketeers 9-1.

“We had a lot of good opportunities to score in the second half,” Luzzi said. “We were getting the looks that we wanted, but we just didn’t capitalize.”

NIU turned around and beat UC Davis 1-0 in overtime Saturday.

The game remained scoreless until the second minute in overtime, when Rivera scored the game winning goal for the Huskies, which was his third goal of the season.

The Huskies again had a lot of chances in the second half to score, taking eight shots on goal.

NIU looked to win this invite like the previous two, but it ran into tough competition this weekend.

“It’s not going to be easy all the time,” Luzzi said. “We played two tough games against two tough teams this weekend and just didn’t do everything that we needed to do to win.”
