Huskies lose to ISU, tie with Northern Iowa

NIU women’s soccer showed some resilience this weekend, tying its game at home after getting bombarded 5-0 against Illinois State.

The Huskies (0-4-1) started off their weekend on the wrong foot in their match up with the Redbirds (3-2), getting out shot 18 to five, with the Redbirds putting 11 of those 18 shots on goal.

“We did not defend our set pieces very well, and that resulted in goals being scored,” said NIU women’s head soccer coach Carrie Barker.

On Sunday, however, the Huskies took a step in the right direction by tying with the Northern Iowa Panthers (2-3-1), 1-1.

The game started off ominously with the Panthers netting a goal in the first 3 minutes of the game, scored by St. Charles native Ashley Capone, with an assist from Charlotte Jones.

The Huskies put the work in defensively, holding the Panthers scoreless the rest of the half. The Huskies then came out in the second half and tallied a goal of their own, the first of the season. The goal was scored by sophomore forward and midfielder Corrine Frankenberg, with assists from Frances Boukidis and Allie McBride.

“Our seniors at the beginning of the season told us we have to fight for each other,” Frankenberg said. “I was focused and determined. This is my team I’m fighting for, and it’s all for them. It’s amazing. I feel like a little kid on Christmas, but it only goes up from here now.”

The Huskies dominated the stat sheet once again, out shooting the Panthers 18-6 with six of their shots going on goal to only two of the Panthers.

There still seems to be a gap between creating the chances and finishing them.

“Our players just have to have a little more composure and concentration in that final touch,” Barker said.
