WHY: Originally released as a hidden track on the AIDS benefit compilation album No Alternative, this little-known (and many-titled) Beatles-esque monster captures Kurt Cobain in rare form. Rather than relying on his legendary “nonsense” lyrical structure, the feminist singer implores a woman to consider bailing out of both a controlling relationship and a domestic tomb. I got sick of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” relatively quickly, but have yet to tire of this swingy assault in the seven or eight years I’ve been listening to it.
