Michigan Invite up next for men’s soccer

The NIU men’s soccer team will participate in the University of Michigan Invitational this weekend.

The Huskies will play Oakland on Friday and Michigan on Sunday.

Coming off a 2-1 victory over St. Louis, NIU (1-0-0) had a strong week of practice and is looking forward to the invite this weekend, said junior goal keeper Jordan Godsey.

“It should be a great atmosphere this weekend,” Godsey said. “We are excited and motivated to build off of our good start.”

The games against Oakland and Michigan should give the Huskies another competitive challenge in the early phase of their season.

“[Oakland is] no pushover, and we can’t take them lightly,” Godsey said. “Then we get to play a Big 10 team in Michigan, which will be a lot of fun. They should both be good games.”

Godsey added when offensive opportunities present themselves, NIU will need to take full advantage of their potential scoring chances.

“We need to move the ball well and score more goals when we are given the chance,” Godsey said. “But we really can’t take any breaks on the field or let up and give 100 percent at all times.”

NIU’s expectations as always is to ultimately leave the weekend with two additional victories to its record.

“We expect nothing less than to win the two games,” Godsey said. “We have been working really hard, and there is no reason for why we shouldn’t come away with these wins.”
