The former NIU student convicted of shooting another NIU student was sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections Tuesday.

Zachary Isaacman, 23, shot Brian Mulder in the leg near the Stevenson North residence hall towers on Feb. 19, 2010. Isaacman was convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after a trial in December.

Isaacman’s sentencing was initially scheduled for February, but Isaacman filed a motion for a new trial, citing the lack of effective counsel. The motion was denied by Circuit Judge Robbin Stuckert during a May 6 hearing.

Isaacman is also required to pay $3600 in restitution, to be paid within five years of his release.

Stephanie Klein, DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney, said she was satisfied with the sentence and that the judge did not give Isaacman the minimum sentence, even though he had no prior criminal history.
