Whose lawn will be a yard above the rest?

DeKALB | DeKalb’s Community Enhancement Committee will select the best yards in the city during the summer months.

The third annual Yards of Distinction program recognizes the best yards for residences and businesses throughout the city during June through September. Each month, one business and one residence is awarded with certificate of recognition along with a yard sign.

DeKalb City Clerk Steve Kapitan said the Community Enhancement Committee looks at nominations, makes a decision and notifies the winners.

“Sometimes only the board members nominate people because it’s not a widely-known thing,” Kapitan said.

Sixth Ward Alderman Dave Baker said if someone thinks a yard is really nice, he or she can send in a picture of the yard with a name and address. A person can only nominate one place per month.

Winners are announced at the city council meetings at the end of each month. Kapitan said nominees are invited to come to the meeting to receive their certificate or it will be mailed to them.

“I think it’s a great idea people get a reward for keeping up their yard,” Baker said. “It’s keeping the entire community involved.”

Nomination forms are available at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. Forms can also be downloaded at www.cityofdekalb.com.
