The Rant: No more Mauer

By Andrew Singer

When is the public going to be cured of its Joe Mauer fever?

When are people going to realize that the catcher isn’t nearly as great as the so-called “experts” claim him to be? Will it be when he has to move to another position when his seemingly 80-year-old knees completely give out? The frail Mauer is coming off arthroscopic knee surgery, and it came out Thursday that the Twins’ backstop wasn’t even physically ready to play at the start of the season.

Perhaps Mauer’s downfall will come when people fall out of love with singles hitters and go back to digging the long ball (it is, after all, what the chicks dig).

It seems everyone loves the hometown kid that decided to stay home by signing an eight-year, $184 million contract extension. Why do people love him, though? Eighty-one career home runs shouldn’t equal unconditional love. Mike Piazza on the other hand = <3.
