Weekender’s list for March 25

By Chris Krapek

DeKALB | Seriously, it was Spring Break just last week. You don’t need to go home.

This is the first official weekend of spring and, although it might snow, there’s still plenty of stuff you can do in DeKalb. Here are my choice picks for what you should be doing the next few days:

What: A Night At The Movies, presented by The NIU Fencing Club

When: Tonight, 8:30 p.m.

Where: Lincoln Hall Commons Room

How much: Free

Why: I didn’t know we had an NIU Fencing Club. If you didn’t either, strap on a gorget and see if you have what it takes. At 6 p.m. in the Rec Center tennis court, the Fencing Club will be giving out free lessons. This may be the only opportunity in your life to hold a sword. After that, the free ride continues as the group will show “The Three Musketeers: The Queen’s Diamonds,” the 1973 film starring the likes of Charlton Heston, Christopher Lee and Raquel Welch. You better believe refreshments will be served.

What: Mike and Joe

When: Tonight, 10:30 p.m.

Where: Starbusters, 930 Pappas Dr.

How much: ?

Why: DeKalb’s favorite genre of music, “Dave Matthews Band cover songs,” is back with a vengeance. A staple at ‘Busters, this marks the second appearance of Mike and Joe already this semester, with one more on the way. This bro-duo is always a good draw. Watch them effortlessly transition from Goo Goo Dolls to Counting Crows to Train to original songs. If I were you, I’d start scouting out a place to toss the hackey sack around early.

What: The Resolve Tour featuring Koji

When: Sunday, 7 p.m.

Where: The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway

How much: $8

Why: Koji and Gucci Mane have something in common; Associated Press both called their albums some of “The Most Overlooked of 2010.” A musician and activist, Koji is up on stage with just his acoustic guitar. In the past year, he’s released four albums and works with organizations like Invisible Children. On day five of his current 75-day tour across the country, someone broke into his tour van and stole his merch and donation money — yet he’s still coming to town! Koji already seems like the bomb, check him out before he gets huge.
