Hair salon will hold Cut-a-thon for DeKalb resident
March 3, 2011
A local hair salon will be helping a DeKalb resident in need this weekend.
Hair Cuttery, 2350 Sycamore Road, will be hosting a Cut-a-thon this Sunday from 5:30 to 7:30p.m. All proceeds will benefit Justin Hernandez, a DeKalb man who is diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and is in need of a lung transplant.
“Justin has been in the hospital since Nov. 26,” said his wife Niki Hernandez.
Hair Cuttery will ask for a $10 donation for each haircut, but additional donations are welcome. The price for a basic haircut is $15.
The idea for the Cut-a-thon was developed by Katie Larson a family friend and assistant salon leader at Hair Cuttery.
“They are friends of mine and he’s been in the hospital, so I wanted to find a way to help out,” Larson said.
Raffle tickets for the event are also being sold for approximately $100 worth of salon products. The tickets are on sale now only at Hair Cuttery at 2350 Sycamore Road. Winners need not be present at the event to win, Larson said.
“It was definitely a surprise that Katie did this for us,” Niki Hernandez said. “I am really grateful for everything that she is doing.”
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that causes the body to produce an unusually thick mucus that can clog the lungs or prevent the body from breaking down and absorbing food, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. People afflicted with cystic fibrosis must maintain treatment constantly.
