Rebecca Black is horrible, but so are most pop stars

By Jack Baker

“Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday. Today is Friday, Friday. We, we, we so excited. We so excited. We gonna have a ball today.”

These are just a few of the many ridiculous lyrics from the YouTube sensation “Friday” by Rebecca Black that is currently dominating the Internet.

In fact, it’s so prevalent that the melody is probably already stuck in your head after reading those lyrics.

While no one really takes “Friday” seriously as a piece of music, this song is the epitome of everything that is wrong with music.

The song is terrible, but it is only so bad because it is a combination of some of the problems facing music today.

First off, the lyrics are atrocious.

Patrick Bethke, sophomore manufacturing engineering and technology major, said that at first he didn’t think the song was too bad until he realized just how awful the lyrics are.

“She was just singing about really obvious, stupid things like naming the days of the week,” Bethke said. Now Bethke thinks the song is “stupid.”

While it’s true that the quality of the lyrics is bad, this is not just a problem for Black. Many other singers, including artists that are extremely popular, have lyrics that are just as stupid.

Ke$ha’s newest single, “Blow,” which is currently number 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 has her just repeating the word “blow” over and over again for the chorus. Is that really any better than listing the days of the week or going over her morning routine?

Surprisingly enough, Ke$ha also details her morning routine in the song “Tik Tok.” I guess it’s just much cooler when your morning involves brushing your teeth with a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Even Katy Perry’s new single “E.T.,” which is third on Billboard’s Hot 100, has lyrics that are just about on par with the lyrics of Black and Ke$ha.

In it she sings, “Kiss me, kiss me. Infect me with your love and fill me with your poison. Take me, take me. Wanna be your victim, ready for abduction.” She’s singing about an alien coming to Earth and seducing her; how is this any better than the lyrics in “Friday?”

A lot of people have also been making fun of the Black’s singing ability and the heavy use of Auto-Tune in the song.

For anyone that believes that the famous pop stars are much more talented singers than Black, I suggest that you go online and check out the video of Britney Spears singing without any pitch correction during one of her concerts.

People can make fun of Black for her singing ability, but she is definitely not the first singer to use Auto-Tune in a song, and her actual voice can’t be as bad as Spears’ in that video.

While “Friday” is the epitome of everything that is wrong with music, it is certainly not the only example of a terrible song gaining a lot of attention.

Everyone writes it off as a joke, but there are a ton of popular singers that have just as little talent singing lyrics that are just as stupid.

If Black really is the worst artist ever and “Friday” is the worst song ever, as many people on the Internet are now claiming to be the case, then people like Ke$ha or Katy Perry shouldn’t be rated too far ahead of her.

To be clear, Rebecca Black is terrible. But her terribleness is just a symptom of the already ailing music industry.
