Not quite pizza, but just as good
March 21, 2011
Peanut butter and jelly. Batman and Robin. Pizza and college.
Pizza has become a stereotypical staple of the time spent pursuing a higher education.
But even its biggest fans can find themselves seeking alternatives to the same old pie, and I can speak from experience.
Finding new ways to enjoy (or take a break from) this Italian sensation are not as hard as you might think. DeKalb is not only known for some killer pizza spots, but some other fantastic dishes.
Here are my favorite dishes from some well-known DeKalb pizza joints.
Call them up tonight and taste them for yourself.
DISH: Topperstix
WHERE: Toppers, 1015 W. Lincoln Highway
START COST: $4.99 (Single order, plain)
WHAT: Toppers takes the concept of the breadstick and pushes it to a delicious extreme.
A garlicy, cheese-loaded treat that can be topped with several of their pizza extras and dipped in anything from marinara to nacho cheese.
DISH: Cheese Nuggets
WHERE: Pizza Pros, 1205 W. Lincoln Highway
START COST: $7.12 (Plain)
WHAT: A somewhat-close relative to Topperstix, this incarnation takes a pizza, strips it of its sauce and gets it “smothered in mozzerella.”
Unlike Toppers, however, this one can get any pizza topping on the menu added to it. If you’re ordering for a lot of hungry friends, this is the way to go.
DISH: Beer Nuggets
WHERE: Lukulos, 1101 W. Lincoln Highway
START COST: $4.60 (Small order with pizza sauce)
WHAT: This entry on the list diverges somewhat from the pizza-based items mentioned previously, but still doesn’t disappoint. Hunks of dough dropped in a deep fryer and dipped in pizza and cheese sauces. Simple, affordable and delicious.
