NIU’s gymnastics team lost its sixth meet in a row on Saturday at No. 16 Iowa, 195.950-193.425.

The team scored above 193 for the second straight time.

The Huskies (1-9 overall, 1-5 MAC) lost every event to Iowa, but they managed to post a new season-high score in floor exercise at 48.425.

On floor, the Huskies were led by sophomores Natalie Sutter and Marisa Liptak, who both posted a team-leading 9.725.

NIU’s best event this weekend was the uneven parallel bars. They were led by senior Jillian Tanaka, who posted a career-high and team-leading 9.825. NIU did not post a score lower than 9.625 in the event.

Head gymnastics coach Mark Sontag has been impressed by his team’s performance on bars all year long.

“Bars have been a complete group since the beginning of the year,” Sontag said. “They give us really good routines and scores every meet. They have been rock solid and consistent for us all year.”

Senior Holly Reichard also performed well again this weekend. She posted a 39.000 in the all-around competition, which placed second.

Reichard also led the Huskies in vault and balance beam. Her score of 9.750 in vault tied her season high, and her score of 9.825 in balance beam, which tied her for second in the event, was also a season high.

Other top performers for the Huskies included senior Sarah Hurley, who posted a career-high performance on balance beam, 9.750.

Junior Tanya Rachan, who was back on floor for the second week in a row after being injured, posted a 9.700.

Even though the Huskies lost at Iowa, they still remain confident in themselves and believe in what they are doing.

“We have been competing a lot better as of late,” Sontag said. “We continue to give good performances and put up good scores which is good to see. I’m looking forward to seeing them build on that this upcoming weekend.”
