The Rant: Don’t drink and drive

By Andrew Singer

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera returned to Tigers camp on Thursday for the first time since being arrested last week on suspicion of drunk driving. People are still up in arms over the five-time all star’s decision to sip a bottle of scotch while sitting on the side of the road in a running car. First off, scotch is great.

So, I can understand why good ol’ Miguel would want to indulge. Second, people are going to forget about this minor slipup as soon as the slugger starts slamming home runs in April. Just like when Mickey Mantle was hitting tape-measure shots after boozing the night before.

In my perfect world, it would be perfectly acceptable for players to drink a beer at their locker while being interviewed after the game. Miguel Cabrera should not be treated like a priest or politician. He’s a ball player, that’s it.
