Career fair gives taste of work past NIU

Career Services is helping students prepare for the upcoming career fair.

The fair, which will be held Wednesday in the Convocation Center, is offering students the chance to meet with potential employers.

Mary Myers, assistant director of campus and employer relations, said the fair is for all majors with the exception of the College of Law.

Students in majority of the colleges on campus may have a shot at their dream job.

“Students have to convince the employer,” Myers said. “Students should research their employer and see what they are looking for.”

Career Services is helping students learn exactly how to present themselves to employers and sell themselves as best as they can.

“At Career Services the students are offered walk-in services, counselors help students individually and in their classrooms,” Myers said. “We do some targeted preparation, in classroom preparation, and we promote through e-mail and hand out sheets with tips.”

Myers said when students attend the fair they should ask questions and effectively communicate their interest in the position they’re seeking.

“This is the time for networking, practicing and the opportunity to consider other options that the employer might have,” Myers said.

Most importantly, Myers said students should never underestimate the importance of appearance, behaving professionally and communicating professionally.

Archeology graduate student Adam Kutryb said he wasn’t planning on attending the fair.

“I looked over the list and nothing interested me,” Kutryb said. “I’m an archeology major, and it’s mostly business.”
