DeKALB | NIU’s gymnastics team recorded another team high score on senior night Sunday, but it also came away with another loss, falling 194.800 to 192.875 to Kent State.

The Huskies (1-6 overall, 1-4 MAC) beat their previous high score by 1.725 points and continue to improve each week.

Kent State (8-2-1, 2-1) won three out of the four events, losing only on balance beam. NIU won balance beam with a score of 48.325. Kent State scored highest in vault with a score of 49.300.

Senior Holly Reichard led the way for the Huskies on Sunday. She put up her top all-around score of the year with a 39.025.

She placed first on balance beam with a score of 9.800 and recorded NIU’s top vault performance with a score of 9.750. She posted season bests in every event.

Reichard was not the only one to record season highs in Sunday’s meet. Season-bests were recorded in 19 out of the 24 routines performed.

Sophomore Marisa Liptak earned the highest score on floor for NIU as well as her season high, 9.775. Junior Ashley Guerra recorded the highest score on bars for NIU as well as her season high, 9.775.

Even though the Huskies lost, it was their best meet of the year. Head coach Mark Sontag said he was very happy with the progress being made and the way his team has been performing as of late.

“This was a great meet for us even though we didn’t get the win,” Sontag said. “We gave solid performances in every event, and we had a lot of energy. We have been working really hard, and it is nice to start seeing results.”
