Local wine seller offering tasting classes

DeKALB | Those wishing to learn more about wine have the opportunity beginning this week at the Choice Wine School.

Choice Wine and Spirits, 2579 Sycamore Road, will host two six-week courses teaching people about wine. The advanced class begins Tuesday and focuses on different regions of the world. It begins with an introduction to French wine.

“France is not the oldest wine-producing country, but it is the most well-known,” said John McIntyre, Choice Wine and Spirits general manager. “It is a good introduction because it has a wide range of grape varieties.”

The other wine-producing areas to be discussed are Italy, Europe, the Southern Hemisphere and the United States.

The beginner’s class focuses on different types of wine.

“The beginner’s class is the basics,” said Tom Barry, Choice Wine and Spirits sales floor associate. “It teaches people about the differences in each wine, such as red wine versus white wine.”

The beginner’s class will include an introduction to red and white wine, champagne and dessert wines and a brief overview of wine producing regions of the world.

The Choice Wine School began last year.

“A trained consumer is a better consumer,” McIntyre said. “We are trying to teach people what different wines taste like and why.”

The beginner’s class begins April 12 and costs $30 per class or $150 for the whole program. The advanced class costs $40 per class or $200 for the whole program.

Classes are held for six weeks from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday nights at Choice Wine and Spirits. All prices include wine and class materials.
