Christine Johnson sworn in as Ill. senator

DeKALB | Illinois swore in its newest state senator Christine Johnson on Monday.

Johnson, a graduate of NIU, will be taking over the 35th district for the former senator Brad Burzynski, who recently retired.

“I am very excited to serve the people of the 35th district and am looking forward to hearing what concerns and interests that they have,” Johnson said.

Johnson discussed her plans and focus as she takes her new seat.

“Given my former position as DeKalb County Treasurer my focus will be largely fiscal in nature,” Johnson said. “I hope to help get our state’s fiscal health in order.”

Johnson will be replacing Burzynski, who held the position since 1992.

“Senator Burzynski was a great voice for all citizens and he will be greatly missed,” Johnson said. “I am confident that I can be just as responsive and helpful as I take over the position.”

Theresa Martin has been appointed as interim county treasurer in Johnson’s absence.

“Johnson’s permanent replacement will be decided upon tomorrow night at the county board meeting,” Martin said.

The vacancy will be filled with a Republican because the replacement must be from the same party as the previous treasurer, Martin said.

“When a position is vacated, it requires the county board chairman to nominate someone to fill the position,” said County Administrator Raymond Bockman. “His nomination is then voted upon by the board which will happen tomorrow night.”
