Girl Scouts use new cookie app for smartphones

The Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois are one out of 20 other councils piloting a new cookie locator app, which launched in January.

The new Girl Scout Cookie Locator app was featured as one of the top three free apps for Android market, said Ann-Marie Soderstrom, public relations manager for the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois’ Rockford Service Center.

In addition to locating the nearest cookie booths, customers can find out nutritional information and ingredient lists about their favorite cookies.

“I would probably download it,” said junior art education major Emily Harvey. “Girl Scout cookies are really good.”

The app also features an interactive quiz to determine a person’s “cookie personality.”

“I would probably download it out of curiosity to see how many girl scouts are selling cookies in my area,” said Lisa Oller, sophomore pre-elementary education major.

According to a Feb. 14 press release from Soderstrom, the app is available for iPhone and Android Smartphones.

“The launch of the app was to make it easier for our customers to locate cookies and easier for our girls to promote their own sales,” Soderstrom said.

Soderstrom said whenever a troop signs up to do a cookie booth they tell the Northern Illinois office and then the details about the dates, times and costs go into their system and the app.

“So far, we’ve heard really good things, especially from our parents,” Soderstrom said. “It’s a lot easier to get the word out.”

Selling Girl Scout cookies is one of the programs in which many troops participate. Cookie sales help young girls with their people skills, money management and business ethics, Soderstrom said.

“It teaches them a lot about working hard and achieving something that you want to achieve,” Soderstrom said.

Soderstrom said as of Wednesday afternoon, the app was downloaded from the Android Market 10,359 times and over 70,000 times from the Apple Store.
