U know Big Sean?

His name has been spreading increasingly throughout campus since it was announced that he would perform at the NIU Convocation Center Party at 11 p.m. on Saturday.

Rapper Big Sean was born Sean Anderson on March 25, 1988 in Santa Monica, Calif., but he claims Detroit as his hometown. He is known for his rhythmic style, lyrical compositions and his relationship with Kanye West.

In 2005, the aspiring rapper met West while he was doing an interview at local Detroit radio station 102.7 FM.

Big Sean continued to send West samples of his music to be critiqued until he got a phone call asking him to be a part ofWest’s label G.O.O.D. Music.

After joining G.O.O.D. Music in 2007, Sean signed with Def Jam Island in 2008.

Big Sean’s career started to gain momentum with the drop of “Finally Famous- The Mixtape” and “UKNOWBIGSEAN – Finally Famous Vol. 2.” He recently released “Finally Famous: The Album.”

Sean also appeared on West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” album, gaining further exposure.

“Big Sean will be the best thing out of Detroit since the ‘04 Pistons [basketball team], J Dilla and Eminiem,” said 368 Music Group producer Sunny Norway. “He’s a LeBron [James]-type artist, meaning he can play any position and can adapt to the game. He can get on a song with Gucci [Mane] and be lyrically catch, and at the same time he can get on a song with Talib [Kweli] or Mos Def and be conscious.”

Tickets for the Big Sean NIU Convocation Center Party go on sale at noon Saturday. Admission is $15 for NIU students. Discounts are available for students with an NIU hall entry card.
