Luzzi signs seven to soccer class of 2011

“Chicago Sun-Times'” player of the year Paul Hogan highlights a seven-player recruiting class for the NIU men’s soccer team. NIU head coach Eric Luzzi announced the signings last Friday. Hogan scored 26 goals for Downers Grove North High School on his way to becoming a unanimous all-state selection. Five of the recruits are products of the US Developmental Program. Prior to signing with the Huskies, Jabari Danzy trained with the Chicago Fire Academy Team. Danzy scored eight goals for the Fire last season. Hugo Gonzalez is the lone goalkeeper in the 2011 recruiting class. Gonzalez comes to the Huskies from the Chicago Sockers. The Sockers are recognized as one of the best club soccer teams in the nation. Senior kicker on the NIU football team Michael Cklamovski played for the Sockers in high school.

Doeren and staff to speak at fundraiser

Dave Doeren and the rest of the NIU football coaching staff will host the Huskie Athletic Support Fund on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. The fundraiser will be held in Victor E. Court in the Convocation Center. Fans will be given the opportunity to speak with Doeren’s staff and a select group of student athletes. Free food and drinks will be served at the event. Women’s tennis falls to Eastern Illinois

Playing at the Danville Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, the NIU women’s tennis team (0-3) dropped a 5-2 decision to Eastern Illinois (2-0). Kelly Phillips and Haley Dekkinga notched the only wins for the Huskies in the fourth and fifth singles spots respectively. NIU will take the short trip to Chicago on Friday to take on UIC.

Men’s tennis shifts lineup order

Shaking up the NIU men’s tennis team’s singles lineup over the weekend, second-year head coach Patrick Fisher moved junior Roman Turtygin into the no. 1 spot. Sophomore Maksym Bartiuk had held the no.1 spot since the beginning of the 2010 spring campaign. NIU (1-3) lost 6-1 to the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (4-1). In the no. 1 spot, Turtygin captured the only win on the day for the Huskies.

Harnish honored by Touchdown Club

NIU quarterback Chandler Harnish was honored by the Touchdown Club of Columbus as the MAC Player of the Year.

The Touchdown Club of Columbus is the same organization that named defensive end Jake Coffman as its 2009 Male Athlete of the Year.
