Cast, director and audiences deserve credit for ‘The Memorandum’
February 23, 2011
The school of theatre and dance just had a two-week run of Vaclav Havel’s “The Memorandum.” As a cast member, I wanted to express my gratitude towards the cast, crew and the amazing audiences that we had.
“The Memorandum” is a difficult show filled with complex text and characters that portrays communist life in Czechoslovakia. As a cast of mostly sophomores, we stepped up to the plate and did more than what our elders and peers expected of us.
Of course, this great success wouldn’t have been accomplished without the visionary brilliance of professor and director Patricia Skarbinski.
A native of Poland, Patricia has seen the effects of communism first-hand and was a great source of information throughout the run of the show. Her knowledge of the play was massive, but the greatest part was that Patricia really gave us the freedom to explore these people, and as an actor, I couldn’t ask for more.
On first reading the play, I didn’t think much of it. But the end product surprised us all. Even more surprising was the audience’s reaction.
I forgot it was a comedy, so when the audience responded, I was grateful and humbled to know that we did justice to Havel’s work.
The audience’s energy is fuel to the fire and without you, the play wouldn’t have been nearly the success
that it was.
