Gymnastics still seek elusive first victory

DeKALB | NIU gymnastics is still looking to earn its first win of the season.

The Huskies take on Bowling Green in a conference showdown at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Convocation Center.

The Huskies (0-3 overall, 0-1 MAC) are coming off a tough loss to Eastern Michigan (1-0, 1-0) in which they were out-scored 187.800-186.825.

NIU is looking to overcome a slew of early season injuries. Last weekend, the Huskies started without standout junior all-arounder Tanya Rachan, and watched Kim Gotlund and Jessica Watanabe suffer injuries during their vault routines.

“Everyone is strong in the MAC,” said NIU head coach Mark Sontag. “Every opponent that we face is a strong and will not be taken lightly.”

Bowling Green (1-0, 0-0), led by head coach Kerrie Beach, is coming off a big home win against UIC in which it won the contest 190.225-185.525.

The Falcons were led by Dawn Christman’s career-best performance in which she posted an overall score of 38.425.

Christman scored highest on vault and floor exercise against UIC, posting a 9.775 in both events.

BGSU is picked to finish sixth in the MAC. The Falcons have had recent success in DeKalb, going 4-2 in their last six meets at the Convo.

Bowling Green is 10-5 all-time against Northern Illinois.

The Huskies will look to get Rachan, who is listed as questionable, back into the line-up Sunday afternoon. Gotlund, however,  will likely miss the meet due to an ankle injury acquired last weekend.

Sontag said he is confident, though, that his young talent will be able to step in and be competitive.

“[They’ll be] staying with what they’ve been doing in practice and meets and learning to compete,” Sontag said. “They’ve had time on the equipment and have performed during the last few meets, and are ready to compete.”
