Tom Matukewicz named interim NIU football head coach

NIU Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher announced Tuesday that NIU linebackers coach Tom Matukewicz will serve as interim head coach of the Huskies in the uDrove Humanitarian Bowl.

“I have complete confidence in Tom Matukewicz and what he is going to bring to our team beginning today and continuing through the bowl game in Boise,” Compher said.  “He’s a coach who brings tremendous enthusiasm every day.  The team knows and likes him, and he’ll be a great leader for our team during this time.”

NIU also confirmed that at least 10 members of the 2010 NIU coaching staff will be assisting Matukewicz on Dec. 18 against Fresno State.

In 2007, while assisting former NIU head coach Jerry Kill on the Southern Illinois coaching staff, Matukewicz was honored as the FCS Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association.

Matukewicz garnered the award in large part for his coordination of the Salukis’ run defense; one of his primary duties as a part of the NIU coaching staff.

Kill led the Huskies to a 10-3 record in 2010 before accepting an offer to become the University of Minnesota’s head coach late last week.
