DeKalb Fire Department continues ‘Red Wreath Program’

Beginning Thanksgiving Day the DeKalb Fire Department will display three wreaths at all three fire stations.

The wreaths will have red bulbs on them, for every holiday related fire emergency firefighters will replace a red bulb with a white one.

The “Red Wreath Program” was started in 1986 by the Illinois Fire Chief Association as a way to raise awareness around the city on fire and home safety during the holiday season, said Scott Love, DeKalb assistant fire chief.

The wreaths will be displayed at Fire Station 1, 700 Pine St.; Fire Station 2, 1154 South Seventh St. and Fire Station 3, 950 W. Dresser Road.

Love said DeKalb saw no holiday related emergencies during the 37 days the wreaths were up and that residents are usually safe around the holidays.

During that 37 days the department responded to 485 requests for emergency services, according to a press release from the fire department.

Love said holiday related emergencies can include lit candles around vegetation and live Christmas trees.

“If you have a live tree you just have to be careful, and you need to be sure to take care of it so it won’t dry out,” Love said.

Love said he did know if more accidents occur during winter, but said emergencies get more attention during the winter because of the holidays.

“It’s just because during holiday emergencies are usually more depressing so they usually get more attention,” Love said.
