Re:New DeKalb, businesses team up for holiday celebrations

By Shadonna Merriweather

Re:New DeKalb and downtown DeKalb businesses are partnering up for the next eight weeks to provide Holiday traditions for the community from Saturday until Dec. 18.

The intersection of Lincoln Highway and Second Street will be blocked off Saturday and Sunday for the traditional downtown DeKalb Holly Days celebration. There will be in-store discounts, music and treats for family and friends. The shops opening times differ, but usually begin at 10 a.m.

Lindsey Engelsman, marketing and special events coordinator of Re:New DeKalb, said this is an event where the stores have open houses and offers several different holiday-themed surprises.

“The stores open houses will be offering free gift wrapping, discounts and specials,” Engelsman said. “The stores are also great places to find great gifts.”

Engelsman said they’re optimistic about their vision to create exciting downtown outings.

“We make events that can be great family traditions,” Engelsman said. “We want people to enjoy the beautiful downtown scenery with great stores for people to get their holiday shopping done and keep family traditions strong.”

Engelsman said this event is just the beginning and urged everyone to go to the website for the calendar of more events. In addition to Holly Days, starting Dec. 2, every Saturday there will be carriage rides from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Engelsman said the most exciting time is the visits with Santa and for kids to bring their wish lists to tell Santa what they want.

“Anytime kids see Santa riding down the street, they get excited which always creates some type of memory,” she said.
