Plenty to do over Thanksgiving break

By Chris Krapek

You’re loosening your pants. The tryptophan is kicking in and those candied yams are putting you in a coma. There’s your family arguing over what year they vacationed to Niagara Falls. And oh, here’s grandpa, talking your ear off about the merits of the Tea Party.

To some, this sounds like one’s own private hell. To most, it’s just another Thanksgiving.

Instead of running back to the suburbs the minute your class gets over Tuesday, why not linger in DeKalb and see what the town has to offer? In addition to only worrying about rivaling town folk for those $3.99 deals on appliances on Friday, if you stay in the Barb City for break, there are things to entertain you.

Here are three choice (if not, the only) events to hit up in town over Thanksgiving break.

WHAT: Blood On The Dance Floor

WHERE: The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway

WHEN: 7 p.m. Nov. 26

COST: $10 in advance, $12 at the door

WHY: Named after the Michael Jackson song, “Blood On The Dance Floor” will satisfy any scenester’s quench for massive amounts of hair product and Hot Topic riffs. The Orlando, Fla. duo play hypersexual power-pop that you thought died in high school. With lyrics like “Now make your move into my room / And I’ll whip out my Dr. Doom,” you know this show will be filled with rich intellectual discourse. But hey, if this is your thing, right on. I heard their rendition of “Inject Me Sweetly” is divine.

WHAT: Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

WHERE: The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St.

WHEN: 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Nov. 26

COST: Free

WHY: After you’re done with your trek to Route 23 for Black Friday deals, why not nurse your economical hangover by taking in a flick? I don’t like animated movies. I thumb my nose to Pixar. But “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs” is actually pretty imaginative and moderately funny. Plus, it’s completely free and will be screened on the biggest movie screen in the county, in one of the most historic theaters in the country.

WHAT: Black Wednesday

WHERE: Otto’s Niteclub & Underground, 118 E. Lincoln Highway

WHEN: 8 p.m., Wednesday

COST: $5

WHY: Sponsored by the Rockford-based Smoke Good Records, Black Wednesday will seemingly feature three different hip-hop acts. I say seemingly because there is little information around about the performers, J-Sinn, Desperado and Showtime. With a record label named after smoking…something, one could only assume that we’ll get some Kottonmouth Kings-esque, hazy-rhyming. With only a few holding down the hip-hop scene in DeKalb, an alternative show like this is a rarity.
