Prosecution requests DNA sample from Curl

By John Bachmann

The prosecution has asked for a DNA sample from William P. Curl, the man charged with the murder of NIU student Antinette “Toni” Keller.

According to the motion filed Friday by the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office, during the death investigation of Keller, Curl was interviewed by DeKalb Police where he described her death.

Curl, 34, of DeKalb, described the clothes and shoes he was wearing at that time. He told police he threw away his shoes because they were suede and had blood stains that would not come out, according to the court document.

After conducting a search at a garbage dump, police found several shoes that have the potential of belonging to Curl, according to the court document.

Because of this, prosecutors are requesting a sample of Curl’s DNA by means of a cheek swab to identify if the shoes found are his, according to the court document.

Curl was charged Oct. 29 with five counts of first-degree murder, arson, sexual assault, possession of a converted vehicle and obstructing justice.

Keller was last seen on Oct. 14 when friends said she was heading to Prairie Park.

Burned human remains were found two days later.

The human remains found in the park have yet to be identified.

Curl is currently being held in the DeKalb County Jail as he was unable to post 10 percent of the $5,065,000 bond.

The motion for this DNA sample will be given to the judge at Curl’s next court appearance at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at the DeKalb County Courthouse with the judge making a ruling on it. This is court appearance is considered a status update.
