DeKALB | As NIU continues to implement new security measures, a new area of interest on campus has arisen.

After a female NIU student was attacked early morning on Oct. 30 near Eco Park and Lot W, the area has gained attention from students and the university.

“There’s a lot of conversation about areas that need security, and that is one of them,” said Brad Hoey, team leader of Media Relations and Internal Communications.

The area in question is north of Grant North, which includes Eco Park, Lot W and a dirt path which leads to the apartments on Regent Drive and the surrounding area.

The path is unlit and sandwiched between a wooded area on the left and a large dirt mound on the right. Students commonly take the path to visit the apartments, especially on weekends.

“I’ve felt a little nervous back there,” said freshman psychology major Leanna Rosinski, who said she has used the path at least four times this semester.

Rosinski said since freshman Antinette “Toni” Keller went missing, she has only used the path once and was with a large group.

Because the area is on the outskirts of campus, the university works in conjunction with the City of DeKalb, Hoey said.

Hoey said the city is taking initiative to improve security measures along with NIU.

Hoey said NIU routinely patrols the entire campus, but realizes that it is impossible to have someone everywhere at all times. Hoey encourages students to utilize services the university already has in place like Late Night Ride and Huskie Patrol escort service.

He also reminds students to continue walking in groups and taking other necessary safety precautions.

Rosinski said she takes precautions when she goes out like walking in groups and carrying pepper spray, but would like to see more security measures.

“I would like more lights in the area,” she said.

“We’re looking into all possible options,” said Sgt. Alan Smith of the NIU Police.

Smith said those options may include lights and cameras, and encouraged students to keep using safety precautions like the buddy system and staying in well-lit areas.

Hoey said the university is always working to improve security.

“A number of measures are being looked at, and you will see it in the near future,” he said.

Smith said the NIU Police are following up on all leads regarding the attack near Lot W.
