Dorm of the Month: Decorations color dorm
November 11, 2010
An explosion of color was the best phrase freshman nursing major Amy Wilson could use to describe her’s and Katie DeVita’s, freshman special education major, Lincoln Hall room.
The room just kind of came together, Wilson said. She and DeVita did not know each other or plan anything for the room before they came to NIU.
“We knew we were going to have different colors, so we just got a random colored rug and have random colors all over the room,” Wilson said. “It makes me happy to walk in here and have decorations and not have a bland or boring room.”
The room is covered in colors, from the bright neon shades in the rug, to the lime green blankets and everywhere in between. While there are a few spaces that are without color, no one can notice because they have all been covered with pictures.
DeVita has hung pictures to create collages above her desk, above her bed and just about everywhere else in the room. She said that she likes the pictures because they remind her of home when she misses people.
Another decoration that stands out is the hangings that cover the curtains. Wilson said on her visit to NIU she saw a room in Lincoln and that she really did not like the curtains.
“They were just old and kind cruddy looking,” Wilson said. “I knew we’d need to cover them somehow.”
So she brought in the hanging circles, and DeVita brought in the peace flags, which have peace written in nine different languages, to brighten up the curtains.
Because their room is so colorful, it’s not surprising that DeVita and Wilson added neon stars and a black light so their room would still be colorful, even in the dark.
“My boyfriend asked me to prom (last spring) with the stars,” Wilson said. “So when I got here I put all of them up. And now I think it’s really cool to have the black light on and just lie down and look up at the stars.”
Both roommates agreed that they are happy with how the room has turned out.
“It’s really a friendly and a cool place to hang out with our friends,” DeVita said. “We pretty much just come in here and hang out a lot of the time.”
When looking at their room, it’s obvious what decorating advice DeVita and Wilson would give to other students.
