No new updates in Keller investigation

DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen said he hopes to have a press conference in the next day or two with new information on the death investigation regarding NIU student Antinette Keller.

The human remains found in Prairie Park have yet to be identified, Feithen said.

Feithen said he knows there are a lot of questions out there, and the DeKalb County Major Case Squad wants to share that information when it is ready.

“In these type of investigations, investigators tend to be extra cautious,” Feithen said.

The DeKalb County Coroner’s Office is working with the investigation, as it does any time a major death occurs, Feithen said.

The search for Keller was reclassified as a death investigation Saturday.

Feithen said at a press briefing Saturday night that the change was made after human remains were found by the DeKalb County Major Case Squad in Prairie Park, south of Route 38 in DeKalb, the last place Keller was known to be headed.

Items were found near the remains that are “consistent with property belonging to Keller,” Feithen said.

Feithen said it could not be confirmed whether the remains were Keller’s, as they had yet to be identified.

Specific items found were not named, either.

Feithen said he could not positively confirm how long the remains had been in Prairie Park.

Keller is an 18-year-old Plainfield resident and an art major.

The Keller family was notified of the change in the investigation prior to the press briefing, Feithen said.

Feithen said the remains were found on land, not water, and were located in a more dense area of the park.

“A portion of Prairie Park remains cordoned off as officers continue investigation,” Feithen said.

Feithen said investigators are pursuing leads in the case and are seeking information about suspicious activity or persons in Prairie Park on or about the time Keller was reported was missing.

At a Friday DeKalb County Major Case Squad press briefing, Feithen was announced as the sole spokesperson and chief investigator in the Keller investigation.

The multi-jurisdictional major case squad consists of law enforcement from DeKalb, Sycamore, NIU and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois State Police.

“There are 40 investigators on this case,” Feithen said.

At the time of the Friday press briefing, Feithen said searches for Keller had consisted of foot and dog searches as well as two air searches and a water search with the help of the St. Charles Fire Department Dive Team.

She was last seen around noon Oct. 14. Keller reportedly told friends she was going towards the Prairie Park area.
