NIU officials are outlining increased safety precautions for campus following a reclassification of missing student Antinette Keller’s case as a death investigation.

Brad Hoey, team leader of media relations and internal communications, said NIU has raised campus safety precautions due to the change in status of the investigation.

“The university is taking some steps to heighten safety and security measures,” Hoey said.

Brian Hemphill, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management, is urging those on foot to be careful around the campus and DeKalb area by walking in groups of three or more, according to an NIU release.

NIU Police have increased their presence around campus, the release said. As of Saturday, Late Night Ride services have been extended and will now run from 4 p.m to 8 a.m. The hours were originally from 10 p.m to 6 a.m.

Late Night Ride services can be made by calling 815-753-2222.

Security escorts for students, faculty or staff are being provided by NIU Police on a 24 hour basis, the release said.

These escorts can be made by calling 815-753-1212.

Campus residence hall access is being restricted to hall residents only with an NIU OneCard shown, the release said.

An information hotline for questions on recent developments is available until midnight Saturday, and available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The hotline can be reached at 815-753-4NIU.

Counselors are available until midnight Saturday in the Neptune Central Smart Classroom. On Sunday students can talk with counselors in the Counseling and Student Development Center in the Campus Life Building from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the release. The center can be reached at 815-753-1206.

The campus remains open and classes will follow a regular schedule.
