She’s the protector of the land of the dead. She’s Amenti, an Egyptian goddess.

She’s a haunted house.

The fifth annual Amenti Haunted House will open its door to the underworld tonight at 7 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St.

Featuring 20 different terrifying scenes among six levels in the historic (and supposedly haunted) theatre, over 3,000 people faced their fears for the 30-minute walk through the Amenti last year.

The supposedly haunted theater features 20 different terrifying scenes and a 30 minute walk where over 3,000 people faced their fears last year.

Alex Nerad, operations director at the Egyptian, said that predicting how scared people will get is a difficult task.

“It’s pretty intense and in-your-face,” he said. “It’s not recommended for kids whatsoever. We try to touch upon any fear you can possibly think of. So hopefully we can scare you, and if not, you’ll be at least entertained.”

A committee met to decide which rooms, themes and scenes would be in Amenti this year. The lengthy and arduous process began in the Spring.

Last year, there were mummies in sarcophagi, the undead wielding chainsaws, a bizarre hospital scene involving a baby doll and a seemingly Satanic Santa Claus.

There have been some fairly significant changes and new additions to the haunted house this year.

People will be caught off-guard a third of the way through because of the new scenes, Nerad said.

While most haunted houses take between three and six months to construct, the Egyptian Theater is transformed into the Amenti is two weeks time. Hundreds of volunteers help to construct the haunted house sets, acquire the hellish props and eventually get into costume and scare guests.

“[The Egyptian} is on one of, if not the only historic theater in the country that’s functional and has a haunted house in it,” Nerad said. “It’s a pretty unique thing.”
