Gentlemen who bring the funk
September 16, 2010
We want the funk, give up the funk.
There will be a whole lot of rhythm going down Saturday night when The Original Sirs play Otto’s Niteclub, 118 E. Lincoln Highway. The 21 and older show starts at 9 p.m. and is $6. The band will be recording video and audio for an upcoming live album at the show.
Saxophonist Bryan Fritz, senior jazz performance major and St. Louis native, talked to the Northern Star about his band and his love for all things funky.
Northern Star: What kind of music do The Original Sirs play, for someone who has never heard you?
Bryan Fritz: We’re a funk band that plays all kinds of different funk covers, from James Brown to the Blues Brothers, to anything you could think of. We also do our own originals.
NS: What draws you guys to funk music? What do you like about it?
BF: I grew up in St. Louis, and down in St. Louis there’s a lot of blues, and that’s what probably drew me to funk the most because it’s a lot like blues. And overall, it just music where you can just have a great time, not only for the musician’s playing it, but for the people listening as well.
NS: How was the transition from Missouri to northern Illinois? Do you like it here?
BF: I definitely like it here. It’s a good community and it’s great especially when we get a lot of students out to see the concert, because that’s who we’re playing it for. It was an easy transition.
NS: The Original Sirs will feature a special guest singer this weekend. Can you talk about that?
BF: I play in a James Brown Band, myself and this guy, his name is Ty Stone, he’s one of the leading James Brown performing acts in the country. He’s going to be singing with us. We’re really, really excited to have him and I think he’s going to be joining our band.
NS: What other local bands do you like from DeKalb?
BF: We really like Legend Haz It. That’s the band we really get along with well. They dig our music, we dig their music. It’s a great community we’ve got going on.
NS: How would you convince someone to come out to your show this weekend?
BF: If you like to have a good time, if you like to dance, if you like to be around people who like to dance, come on out to our show. It’s not only music, it’s a whole performance. It’s an entire show we put on. It’s not like any other concert.
