2 day Middlewest Fest coming to DeKalb
August 19, 2010
When it comes to music festivals, the closest thing locals have is Corn Fest, which may not satisfy the musical hunger of everyone.
As if in response to the prayers of the hardcore and the punk rock set, Kickstand Productions has thrown together the first ever Middlewest Music And Arts Fest.
Middlewest Fest, taking place on the weekend of Sept. 10-11, will feature an eclectic collection of college-age appropriate artists. According to the press release, the festival is not genre-specific. Artists range from the alt-country Murder By Death to the punk rock rapper P.O.S., from the metelcore Miss May I, to the bluesy folk artist, William Elliott Whitmore.
The festival will also feature Gold Motel, the newest band from The Hush Sound’s Greta Salpeter, and MC Chris, the nerdcore rapper as seen on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.
Over 27 musical acts are currently included according to the press release, and John Ugolini, who is producing the event, said that this number is likely to grow.
“More acts will definitely be added as the weeks progress,” Ugolini said. “It looks like we may have some big surprises.”
Bands will perform at a variety of venues in DeKalb. The Egyptian Theatre, Ottos Nightclub, The House Cafe, O’Leary’s Irish Pub, Tapalaluna, Upper Deck Sports Bar and SMLTWN Skate Shop will all host events.
The Debutantes School of Cosmetology will be housing “Against The Wall,” a free independent film festival hosted by Kickstand Productions in conjunction with the NIU Film Department. In addition, Bliss Beads and MCR Framing are helping to produce an arts and crafts event on Palmer Ct, Ugolini said.
Though tickets can be purchased for individual shows. Day passes are also available for $20. The entire event is all ages, except shows at Ottto’s Nightclub, which are 21 and up.
Middlewest Music And Arts Festival may even turn into a tradition in Dekalb, said Ugolini.
“Thus far the reaction from all of the local businesses has been great,” Ugolini said. “With the continued love and support from the community I see no reason why Middlewest won’t be an annual event.”
