DeKalb Police Dept’s annual charity event gives back to the city

The DeKalb Police Department will hold its annual charity breakfast Sunday.

The DeKalb Police Benevolent and Protective Association Charity Breakfast will raise money for the police department to donate back to the city from 8 a.m. to noon at the DeKalb Knights of Columbus Hall, 1336 E. Lincoln Highway.

Detective Angel Reyes said the police association sponsors youth baseball, basketball and other groups around DeKalb. He said the money is usually applied toward kids.

“We’ve been doing it for a while,” Reyes said. “I’ve been here for 13 years, and it started before I got here.”

Reyes said all the cooking at the breakfast is done by both active and retired police officers. Most of the food is donated by Inboden’s Meat Market, 1106 N. 1st St., Wal-Mart, 2300 Sycamore Road, and Whitman Catering and Party, 1503 E. Lincoln Highway.

“It’s a chance to have some good food,” Reyes said. “It’s very inexpensive, and the money goes back into the community. It’s something to do on a Sunday morning, and it’s supposed to be really nice this Sunday.”

Reyes said the menu will include scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, pancakes and fruit.

Breakfast for adults costs $4, children ages 7 to 11 eat for $2 and children 6 years old and under eat for free.
