Students can step back into the ‘90s.

Student Recreation Services is hosting a ‘90s Group Fitness Challenge which started on March 30 and runs through April 30.

The challenge allows participants to take a variety of group fitness classes and earn ‘90s apparel to dress a paper doll, said Becky Lewis, assistant director of fitness and wellness for recreation services. Anyone can participate if they have a FitPass which can be purchased at the Rec Center Service Counter.

For each class that a participant attends, they will earn a different piece of clothing for their doll. The apparel that is associated with the classes includes a jacket for the step class, pair of jeans for the yoga class, socks for the kickboxing class, shoes for the bootcamp class, hat for the pilates class, shirt for step funk class, sunglasses for PiYo class, walkman for TBC class, belt for AGT class and bracelet for the cycle class. After attending 10 different fitness classes, gathering all 10 pieces of apparel for the doll and the doll is completely dressed, the participant is eligible to take the ‘90s challenge class on May 4th, Lewis said.

Two winners will be selected from those who have been FitPass holders all semester and two winners will be selected from those who purchase their FitPass after March 30. Winners will be drawn randomly from all participants who complete the challenge. Winners will receive $50.

Lewis said every year at this point in the semester, participation in classes begins to decline because of students’ hectic schedules so they are offering this challenge to allow students to have fun.

“‘90s music is fun, and a ‘90s class would be a fun way to celebrate the end of the semester,” Lewis said. “A one-hour cardio party is a fun way to kick off the summer.”

Some students who have visited recreation services, and used the facility to work out, thought about participating in the challenge.

Alexia Newbern, freshman psychology major, said she enjoys exercising and is interested in trying the yoga and kickboxing classes offered in the challenge, which she said would push her to exercise better.

“It would give me a reason to work towards the prize,” Newbern said.
