‘Obsessed’ falls flat with generic plot themes

While the economy is causing more of us to reuse our stuff and conserve resources, the recycling of movie plots, a recent Hollywood trend, needs to stop.

The latest suspense thriller “Obsessed” is the newest refurbished classic as Ali Larter’s psychotic office temp-tress is like a new-age version of Glenn Close’s character from “Fatal Attraction.”

Idris Elba plays a successful New York businessman, Derek Charles with the perfect wife (Beyonce Knowles), the perfect job and the perfect house.

When a sexy new office temp (Larter) starts working at his firm, Derek can’t help but notice.

Though he makes it clear he is happily married and tries to steer clear of the tempting woman, she will stop at nothing to be with her latest obsession.

While Larter’s character is the obsessive femme-fatale type we have seen many times, she makes it her own and shines above the other two main characters, as her crazy antics and seductive prowess propel the movie.

The theater crowd gasps and gawks at the screen as Larter unleashes the inner freak we’ve only seen glimpses of on “Heroes,” but the PG-13 rating keeps her antics tasteful enough to watch.

Unlike “Fatal Attraction,” in which the evil and manipulative crazy-lady is brought down by the wits of the man she was after, “Obsessed” takes a more pro-feminine approach as the jealous and angry wife, played by Knowles, steps in to bring the home wrecker down. It was an interesting twist to an otherwise common tale, but the two strong women together really emasculate the husband, Elba, and made him look like a wimp.

Beyonce’s character hurt the film as she fell flat attempting to play a role that didn’t rely on her abilities as a singer.

She is completely unconvincing as a mother who is deeply in love with her husband, as her facial expressions are overdone and some of her lines sounded like they were read directly from the script.

Is it really that tough to pretend to be infatuated with a charming and ridiculously good looking man like Idris Elba?

Knowles did pull her act together when the singer took off the diva mask to duke it out in a bare-fisted cat fight with Larter.

Going to see this movie with high expectations and a haughty view of cinema will only lead to a let down.

However, if it’s been a while since you’ve seen “Fatal Attraction” or “Swimfan” and you just want a little action and drama outside of reality TV shows and “Gossip Girl,” the re-hashed plot of

“Obsessed” will keep you entertained for a while at the very least, not to mention it will make you pay more attention to who your significant other is hanging out with at the office.
