State ban on horse slaughtering remains in effect
April 1, 2009
The Illinois House decided not to overturn the state’s ban on horse slaughtering Wednesday afternoon.
According to an article by The Associated Press, the legislation would have allowed horses to be slaughtered in Illinois so they could be sold as food overseas.
Illinois Rep. Robert Pritchard (R-Hinckley) supported lifting the ban and does not believe that this law solves the issue of inhumane treatment of horses.
“Horses are still being abused,” Pritchard said. “Those advocating humane treatment for animals should still be outraged.”
Illinois Sen. Brad Burzynski (R-Clare) was also disappointed in the results of the vote.
“I’m not surprised,” Burzynski said. “I definitely think there is a need for facilities like this to be open.”
Jordan Matyas, Illinois State Director for The Humane Society of the United States, was very pleased to see that the current ban remains in effect.
“We worked very hard to get rid of horse slaughtering in Illinois,” Matyas said. “It’s a good day for horses.”
The legislation failed with a 50-67 vote.
