At least six apartments were damaged causing $30,000 in damage by a fire Thursday in apartment No. 610 of Amber Manor Apartments, 833 Ridge Drive.

At about 3:30 p.m., DeKalb Firefighters entered building No. 6 of the apartment complex. DeKalb Fire Chief Bruce Harrison said two people were rescued from the surrounding apartments, one was carried out on a ladder, and others were directed through smoke-filled hallways. All three were treated with minor injuries. Harrison confirmed the fire was on the first level of the building, which was occupied by Brandy Braden, according to the press release.

A grease pan on the stove top in the apartment caused the accidental fire, the press release said. Three people were treated and released on the scene for smoke inhalation, Harrison said.

Two witnesses said they saw a woman run out of the apartment yelling her stove was on fire prior to the fire department’s arrival.

Pam Burgess, who lives in the same building as the fire, said she saw smoke coming out of the apartment complex when the woman came running outside. Burgess said the woman told her she put a pot of oil on the stove, went next door, and when she came back, the fire had started.

Another tenant of the complex, Sharon Mallory, said police showed up shortly after the woman came out of her apartment. Burgess said she had been waiting outside for nearly 20 minutes without being allowed in to her apartment.

Fire engines and other medic units were called in from Malta, Cortland, Sycamore, Genoa-Kingston and Hinckley.

The American Red Cross was also on the scene and helped the displaced occupants find a temporary home, according to the press release.
